If they did they can have my next pair of Prada shoes."

Honestly? You better get ready to mail off some Prada shoes. Most of the college websites and the financial aid sites have calculators so you can put in your debt and interest level and figure this out. I wouldn't be surprised at all if most people used them; I certainly did. (Not that doing so makes a huge impact; looking at paying off $60,000 when you think you'll be working as a professional isn't so daunting; actually paying it off when you turn out to be working as a cocktail waitress at that time...)

Getting into debt over an education is a gamble; you calculate your risks, pick the option that'll give you the best odds, and hope it pays off. It's not because of selfishness or entitlement that one loses out, one doesn't somehow "deserve" their unlucky fate, it is not bad fortune earned; but neither can the responsibility for taking the gamble be deflected; who would they be deflected on?

"It’s like people were looking for entitlement and selfishness and they manufactured it as soon as they the potential. "

Likely true; after all, to those commenters who did not get to go to college for whatever reason, the letter writer is in a position of privilege denied to them; they probably believe they could do better, given the opportunity she had. And those commenters who went to college and have prospered and found good employment as a result; it is surely an uncomfortable prospect to consider that they could easily find themselves in such a position, but for luck or a few fortunate choices. Much easier for them to believe that it is simply a moral weakness/failing on the part of the letter-writer...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
